The Brief.

To design a sensitive visual conclusion for the documentary Flying Dream 1, filmed during the 2021 lockdown. The film captures Elbow recording their ninth studio album within the music hall atmosphere of Brighton’s Theatre Royal. The objective was to respect the intimate tone of the sessions and the historical character of the space.

Our Role.

We designed and produced the credit sequence, shaping it to sit naturally within the theatre’s music hall character and reflect the flow of the sessions.

We designed a classic typographic layout that honours the heritage of the Theatre Royal while maintaining a contemporary tone. The typography settles gently within the frame, integrated into the film’s edit so the credits feel inherent to the cinematography rather than overlaid.

Staggered animations establish a measured rhythm, allowing the type to move in dialogue with the instruments of the final track. This approach carries the dreamlike atmosphere of the recording session through to the final note, offering a relaxed conclusion.

To preserve the film's atmospheric integrity, the credits required a delicate balance between tonal restraint and broadcast-standard legibility. We utilized careful timing to ensure the text remained functional and clear without puncturing the visual mood created by the band and cinematography.
